Even if the license fees were a factor, they are chump change in
comparison to the money most U.S. homes spend each year on multichannel TV
services and direct payment for content.
It might be chump change, but consider that it is currently 131.50 GBP
($256.48 USD), which works out to $21 USD per month, and that the
'penetration rate' is almost 100% of TVHHs (the B&W license is much cheaper,
but I have no idea how many households are B&W only.)
And then there is the reality that we also pay a "license fee" for Public
TV in the U.S., as 15% of the operating cost of PBS is derived from the
Federal Government.
Which at $460 million USD per year comes out to be about $5 per TVHH per
year. (Hey, that's MY ox you're goring!)
