I know of no cheap universal remote that controls the Xbox. My solution
right now is the Sony RM-AV3000, and I use it for the xbox, linux htpc,
directivo, hd set, and receiver.
It is the biggest PITA to program, but once done it performs rather
well, and most people can understand the buttons like 'STB', 'TV'. I
have the receiver, tv and other devices mapped to macro modes, so all
the wife has to do is hold down the TV button and all devices will
switch to the correct aspect ratio, receiver channel, surround modes,
device input, and so forth.
The other nifty feature is that running the macro puts you in that
device mode. So once the button is pushed, the LCD and keys are mapped
for the STB or device that is to be controlled (or multiple).
Ofcourse the fact that it is almost the size of a vhs tape is a good and
bad thing. Good being it lends itself to staying put on a table facing
the devices and bad being if you want to channel surf youre better off
just grabbing the tivo remote. Apart from that, no complaints.
Sure, there are other remotes that one can connect to a PC, but I've
always found them to have a hundred buttons in a small space and are
fairly hard for the newcomer to comprehend.
www.remotecentral.com is the place to find a remote, btw.
They are available (fairly) cheaply on ebay now...
Just my 2c.
Cheers
Kon
