If the fees are killing small time producers, don't they have the option of releasing a Blu-Ray title that has no copy protection? I doubt that a boutique title is going to loose a lot of sales to bootleg copies from China.

How players implement security is not a big issue. The cost to use AASC IS the big issue. The cost for keys, licenses etc., is many thousands of dollars per title. This is not a big deal for the conglomerates who are releasing movie titles, but is effectively preventing Blu-Ray from being used by independent producers and for non movie titles.
