Because 'baseband HD is 1500Mb/s and I don't think NBC has budgeted that
bandwidth from Athens.
JMW> "So, are you the idiot, or do you think I am? ALL DIGITAL VIDEO is
compressed. You don't know, and only conjecture that there is not a 1.5 gig
connection to NYC from Athens. I don't know and don't care, because sending
a single bit more than their viewers can handle is wastage.
A subsequent post mentions that the signals are sent to affiliates using 26
Mb/sec. Do you have any trouble believing that ONE DOES NOT NEED TO
COMPRESS a 26 MB/sec signal to fit within a 45 Mb/sec data path?
"Compression" can be a fuzzy term, and you started off with them encoding
and decoding. Just what form of encoding do you contemplate to get a 26
Mb/sec baseband signal to fit into a 45 Mb/sec path and have it be baseband
at the output? (My answer: NONE.)"

We have tested the most recent Terayon and Leitch devices at our broadcast
station here and they do work.
JMW>"So, you have two single data points? How many hors did these devices
run? I suspect that Jim de at Fox has a more longitudinal viewpoint.
Perhaps things have changed since our brief phone call 12 days ago. I
suspect that he wasn't overstating his situation, but he's trying to do this
and more with the stream switcher, and overlaying logos SEEMS to be the
tough task."

It' not legacy thinking...it is reality. You have to wake up to the fact
that there are still technical limitations you may not be aware of. I DO
know the signal is passing through New York.
jwm>"Oh, and now, you (without offering any data points) are now stepping
back from encode/decode at New York to "the signal is passing through New
York." As Homer Simpson would say, D-oh. It's also passing through San
Jose. I never said anything to the contrary, I was just challenging your
assertion that any encode/decode of the signal to affiliates was occurring
there. So, by abandoning that position silently, you have now conceded my
assertion, for which I thank you.
Additional data points: NBC News broadcasts have all originated from Athens
for the duration. No need to even backhaul news to NYC. NBC news has 250
staffers on duty in Athens.
As for limitations, there are many, (many of which I AM aware of) but you
are only pointing at empty bags (weasels) and trying to use FUD to win this
argument."
