Apparently NCIS is 35mm film. Not sure why that should degrade
the image, but maybe it's like Doug says. Maybe the HD video
source is spruced up to really give some sparkle.

I also noticed really amazing HD from NBC, e.g. Jay Leno or
even last night during the State of the Union address. Is that
1080i or 720p?

In any case, I did experiment switching between the two. My set
is 1024 X 768, 16:9, LCD (hence progressive), and both of my
STBs have a switch to select the component output format: 480,
720p, or 1080i.

All of those settings work fine. I noticed, up close, a little
bit more artifacts when set to 1080i compared with 720p, so I
set it to 720p. But it was not clear to me which was better
from a seated position, a few feet away.
