My 'pad' can have the video playing on it at any time as well.  You can watch 
just that if you want, but the big screen is going to draw your eyes unless you 
want the interactivity.

Think of the whole family playing along with and against each other on "Who 
Wants to be a Millionaire", each person with there own pad.  Or sis checking 
out 
the clothing that one of the girls are wearing on The O.C. (freeze the image, 
click the clothing, see the details, order), while bro checks out details on 
the 
car one of the guys is driving.

How can you assume that any two people will want to see the same set of stats 
on 
the screen?  If my wife 'interrupted' the show by pulling up some interface to 
check something out, I can't imagine liking that.
