Here in Gainesville we can shop at Circuit City, Best Buy, Rex,
Sears, and a number of specialty retailers. But let's focus on Best
Buy, since they have a website and have been the target of recent
positings...

Here is a 27" Advent that BB is selling for only $399 (sorry, no ATSC tuner):

Here is a 32" Toshiba that sells for $899 with NTSC Picture in picture:

When you look at these, try clicking HDTV's 21" to 29"

You will find the Advent and the Samsung widescreen CRT HD receiver,
and a bunch of widescreen LCD panels.

Then click HDTV's 30"-39"

Here you can find the following 4:3 HD ready products:

Samsung 32" flat tube HDTV - $999

Sony WEGA FD Trinitron 32" Flat Tube $999

And the 32" Toshiba mentioned above.

And HERE is an interesting Samsung 32" HD-ready LCD panel. It's
widescreen, with a 1280 x 768 raster 1.66:1 aspect ratio): It's
$2,999, but don't bother because they are sold out.

In fact, if you look at the specs for most of the LCD flat screens,
they rarely have a raster that conforms to one of the ATSC formats.
This is often the case for Plasma panels as well. The reason is
simple...DUAL USE. The markets for these displays have traditionally
been driven by the computer industry; and that includes MANY models
of 4:3 plasma panels. Many of these products have been "repurposed"
as TVs. Many of the "widescreen" plasma panels have a screen
resolution of 1024 x 768, with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Where is that in
Table 3 Bert?

So clearly there are still a number of 4:3 HD ready displays
available. I agree with John that the trend is widescreens. But the
numerology used by the manufacturers does not always agree with the
numerology of the ATSC. Is this not proof that the display and the
emission formats are indeed decoupled in the EXISTING digital world?

Craig
