After all, the 8-VSB folks could lower their transmitter power to compete. I had a VERY interesting talk with Merrill Weiss yesterday, about the work he has been doing with 8-VSB SFNs. Not sure how Bert is going to react to the realities of what Merrill told me. Before I start to discuss the details with the list I want to look at some of the papers he presented here at NAB and see if I can get something to link to. But the bottom line is that it looks quite possible to cover each market with a handful of synchronized transmitters (~5). The power levels for each would be a few KW as opposed to MW. Even better, if all channels were co-located at these sites, it might be possible to use EVERY channel, much like a cable system. He is building such a system for a client, and is working with the FCC on an NPRM to establish appropriate rules. More as I learn more.
