I don't know where you're getting your information (please tell me, off-list if you need to), because to my knowledge, no one has been able to accurately compile any such statistic. Anecdotally, many DTVs do have clear QAM tuning capability (and any one-way CableCARD sets are required to have it), but there are similarly many that do not have. There is no industry reporting of this information (the capability of clear QAM reception on non-CableCARD sets or lack thereof). There's a danger of putting too much emphasis on the Sony announcement. You should recall that about 18 months after the one-way CableCARD deal was announced, nearly all DTVs had that capability. Subsequently, it was found that there wasn't coincident consumer demand for that feature (at the cost differential), and now there are few sets (and no new designs) with it. We're somewhere between 6-18 months before real availability of two-way CableCARD sets. We'll only know a few years from now whether there was coincident consumer demand for the feature (at the cost differential) or not. -----Original Message----- From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Manfredi, Albert E Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2008 1:27 PM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: News: The Real Fight Over Fake News Craig Birkmaier wrote: > It boils down to opportunity costs for the spectrum currently > dedicated to the analog tiers. And it appears that they are doing so. > Keep in minds that hardly ANY of the HD capable TVs shipped to > date have digital cable tuners in them. I don't know of any that do not. What they don't often have, until now, is CableCard. So the digital cable programs they can decode are only the unencrypted variety. In this market, that means all channels, including HD, that are available OTA are available unencrypted over cable. Lack of CableCard support is probably due almost entirely to consumers marching in lock step to the tune of the cable companies. But that will likely change, with this new agreement between Sony and all the major cable companies.
