The reality is that LCDs of the same dimensions as previous HD CRTs already now cost *less* than those CRTs did, only 3 years ago, and that HD CRT TVs are essentially extinct. And yes, many people have also decided that spending more money than they might have done previously, for a larger HDTV than their previous analog TV, makes sense. This would not have been the case *except for* HDTV content being broadcast.
