Lot's of interesting data points in this story.

Of particular interest:

According to the research firm iSuppli, the average retail price of 42-inch HDTVs - one of the most popular sizes this year - has declined to $1,522 from $1,844 last Christmas, an 18 percent drop.

(Note: 42" sets have the ability to deliver resolution approximately equal to 480P, which is well matched to standard definition DVD).

I have a 40 inch 720p set. I assure you most certainly that it is
capable of delivering 720p resolution. The difference between
OTA actual HD programs and even the very best ordinary DVD
is very obvious. The difference between 720p and 480p
was obvious when Fox was delivering 480p OTA.

There exist approx. 40 inch 1080 sets. I'm quite sure that
I could tell the difference between 720p on my set
and 1080 on a 1080 p set the same size, playing a first rate
Blu-ray DVD, from where I sit. Now, at twice the distance
I sit, the latter will be getting much harder.

I also note that the video quality of OTA canned (not live
or live on tape) programming has declined since the start
of OTA HD in our town. Much of it now looks like
film, blurry and washed out.

I'd like to see what cable channels like FoodTV-HD look like,
but I'm waiting for the cable/Dish/DirectTV HD situation
to sort itself out. Is there word about when DirectTV will
get going with their >20 GHz satellite stuff? Will it work
in the rain?
