This must be that "great future" that Eric Schmitt told NAB members he saw
for "radio" last month.

Remember when the 'modest proposal' was to reduce am frequency spans from
10khz to 9 to keep up with international standards? That was 26 years ago.

Google's novel idea for FCC radio spectrum auction
Google on Monday urged the Federal Communications Commission to think
outside the box in designing the rules for its upcoming auction of
radio spectrum. The company hopes that the FCC will use the auction
to encourage more efficient use of radio spectrum in the U.S. Google
said that in some instances, only 5% of available spectrum is
currently being utilized. Google has proposed what it calls a
"real-time airwaves auction model," which would allow a spectrum
license holder to auction off unused spectrum to bidders on a
wholesale basis. The model was based on its own online advertising
auction in which companies bid on the placement of their ads on
Google's search engine based on how much they're willing to pay per
user click through to their websites. He said that a similar auction
for spectrum would allow licensees to farm out spectrum, when they
aren't using it, to smaller commercial operators who couldn't afford
to bid in the FCC's spectrum auction directly. The net result would
be that a greater number of more innovative users of spectrum could
compete to provide wireless broadband solutions to consumers and
businesses.
