Obviously there was a huge market for these vehicles.

One might better ask, what kind of vehicles Detroit would have built without the CAFE standards on passenger vehicles.

But all of this is history now.

The question that is relevant today is how can the U.S. automobile industry survive when Congress and the Car CZAR determine what can be built and therefore, what we can buy.

Keep in mind that the only technology that exists today to meet the new, more rigorous CAFE standards, would require everyone to drive around in hybrids the size of Mini Coopers...
