Digital STB, DTV Key Drivers for Consumer Semis January 24, 2005 12:00am Source: Reed Business Information. All Rights Reserved Electronic News: Thanks to a rapid transition=20 toward higher-end designs that support advanced=20 functionality, the digital set-top box (STB) and=20 digital TV (DTV) semiconductor market is=20 predicted to grow at a compound annual growth=20 rate of 25 percent from $3.1 billion in 2003 to=20 $9.3 billion by 2008, market researchers at IDC=20 reported this week. The Framingham, Mass.-based firm said it is=20 seeing increased demand for high-end designs that=20 allow such features as digital video recording=20 and high definition, while the market for low-end=20 digital STB semiconductors is maturing, all of=20 which is being driven by DTV. "The digital TV chip market is primed for major=20 growth as consumer price points drop and as=20 increasing tuner attach rates add more=20 functionality to the digital TV semiconductor=20 bill of materials," said Ken Furer, analyst for=20 semiconductor research at IDC, in a statement. IDC also found that integrated DVRs boost=20 opportunities for STB chipmakers with digital=20 terrestrial and cable tuners kick-start the DTV=20 market. With HDTV requiring more advanced chip=20 technology, competitive pressures are forcing=20 Japanese DTV OEMs to consider merchant silicon,=20 the firm concluded. <<Electronic News -- 01/17/05>> << Copyright =A92005 Reed Business Information.
