This is kinda smart... by including a hard disk, you give the customer the ability to time-shift and to repeat a transmission. But you don't give him the capability to record an infinite amount of programming, or to take it out of the settop box. By giving the customer 80% of what he needs, you don't need to bother with making an output for an external recording device, and thus you don't have to worry about content protection ! The file format on the hard disk is typically non-standard, and (supposedly) incomprehensible for PCs (that have DVD recorders). So this generous offer is in fact a smart method of copy protection.
