I think it's a very good chance that the FCC will mandate broadcaster
assertion of Active Format Description in MB Dkt 07-91 in the next month or
two.  Then, set manufacturers will be the laggards.  

Which won't help Bert, unless his DVR (unlikely) already supports AFD, or
permits firmware updates.

This is why AFD should be implemented (well) ASAP.  The rest of the
workarounds suggested are band aids that really won't work well anyhow.
