Stream splicing will accomplish that with two encoders and a mux, if one
can't do it.  And, to make real use of AFD, encoders will not only need to
do that, but to embed the proper AFD in the picture metadata in real time.

Now that broadcasters are starting to concentrate on making a business out
of DTV bits, redundancy and flexibility will become paramount.

AFD or no AFD, I'd like to see the MPEG encoder that can smoothly and 
seamlessly switch between 16:9 and 4:3 formats on the fly.
