[opendtv] My new TV supports QAM

I just burned out my third projector bulb and do not have a spare. Last time it cost almost $300 and took more than a month to get one so I decided to do something different this time, at least in the interim. I may not even replace the darn thing.

I drove over to Sam's Club and bought a Vizio 32" LCD for $599. This is mostly large enough for me for most things except maybe movies since I have it about 5 feet from my face.

But the interesting thing was nowhere on the box did it claim support for unencrypted QAM (just "cable") and yet connected to Cox cable it easily picks up the HD channels for ABC, NBC (new to Gainesville), CBS, Fox, and PBS. And this is on my basic cable subscription, about $7/mo. incremental over my regular cable broadband charge.

I actually think this is the most likely future of USA digital TV right now, at least for folks that don't want to pay for a lot of premium channels. I believe it costs very little to add unencrypted QAM support if you are building a digital TV with ATSC tuner anyway.

But still no CW-HD here in Gainesville, from any source.
