[John Willkie] Another funny one, Bert. I think if there were NO radio in a
new car, the buyer wouldn't purchase it, or they would want to pay $500 or
more LESS than the price for a car with a radio. In other words, the value
that a new car buyer associates with a good sound system that includes am/fm
radio is more than the value they would attach to a new iPod. (Hint.)
Another way of looking at it is that there is good profit in good sound
systems in cars.
There also appears to be good profits and value in a car mobile-tv systems
as OEM devices.
But, back to radio.
However, it's hard to imagine a consumer not buying a car, or wanting to pay
a lower price for a car with an am/fm set but without HD Radio. At this
point in time.
There's also the content/commercial load angle. But, I wasn't happy with
the HD Radio options the last time I was flush. I bought a mostly-crappy
Eton shortwave set instead. (I've set off that damn alarm about 7 times
already; once at 3:00 a.m.) So, I can't comment on the content or spot
load; I don't know how well the actual services sound or are deployed.
