You create an extra hook at the physical layer by doing something that DOES NOT break any existing application, and with this new hook you can now do any number of upgrades right down at the nitty gritty physical layer (e.g. time divided service to low drain appliances). And none of this precludes Doug's clever scheme. In fact, Doug's scheme would work to make these other new services more efficient. You wouldn't need to depend on as much additional overhead to create the increase in robustness for good dynamic multipath tracking.
