I think there are considerations that the stats are ignoring. This may be obvious to some, but I know that these stats are often interpreted as a threat to TV entertainment. Possibly even by advertizers. For one, it is not a stretch to expect retired people would watch more live TV on average than either kids going to school or working stiffs. Possibly, those 18-24 year olds will also be watching more live TV when they reach retirement than do now while chasing after girls or practicing their favorite sport. For another, we watch a lot more video now than in the old days. It's almost impossible not to. Online training courses, online research, online news, personal e-mails, online advertizing, etc., are all opportunites for consuming non-live-TV video that didn't exist 30 years ago. So of course online viewing has become a factor. But the categories of video listed above, at least, should not impact TV viewing appreciably. They may have a bigger impact on public library attendance or reading the newspaper, though. I guess I'm saying that at least some of that non-TV related video material is taking the place of other activities than TV entertainment.
