I think that Craig is more interested in discussing services that might be offered over upgraded DTT infrastructure. I won't offer possibilities at this point, but did want to point out that the digital radio spectrum is also going to play in this. While IBOC radio has less total bit rate to offer than DTT, IBOC in the FM band does have one advantage: they are not being requested to return any spectrum after any possible transitional period. In the hybrid mode, IBOC FM stations get to use the same 200 KHz channel they have now for analog, and an additional 200 KHz in sidebands for the digital data, at reduced power. After a potential transitional period, should any such ever exist for IBOC, an FM station gets to retain all 400 KHz for its digital channel. No more guard bands mandated (I guess), and no spectrum returned to the FCC. AM IBOC in hybrid mode needs to expand AM channels from 10 KHz to 30 KHz (but only possible during the day). After analog is shut off, AM digital is returned to the 10 KHz channel, or possibly stretched out slightly to 20 KHz. Maybe that 20 KHz too is only possible at night. Among other things, I've seen proposals to use some of the bit rate of IBOC radio for podcasting. No reason the DTT spectrum couldn't be used the same way.
