[opendtv] Re: LG launches 6th gen ATSC digital TV broadcast receiver chipset

And lastly, in your own experience, I would think this is not something
that should sound so hyped up. After all, you have witnessed in your
own unique circumstances that a 5th gen DEMOD, as opposed to
other components of a receiver, was indeed enough to manage the
multipath. Which means that anything better than that, in terms of
EQUALIZER PERFORMANCE, is likely to do at least as well. Tuner issues
are another matter, but tuners don't seem to follow the same informal
generation numbering scheme.

In case this isn't already obvious, I feel I need to clarify that the tuner is not the component of these 8-VSB receivers that addresses multipath interference. Anything said about addressing multipath problems describes the demod chip and its equalizer.

If overall receiver performance in a given test location was improved significantly by fiddling with the tuner, while the equalizer was unchanged, then obviously multipath-related issues were NOT the cause of reception problems, in that test location with that equalizer.

In Mark Schubin's apartment, that appears to be the case. Receivers with 5th gen demods did not all do as well as the one-off LG prototype STB. So this should tell us that the multipath-related problems per se were solved adequately well by the 5th gen demod for that location, but that there are other things to be addressed in high RF energy locations.
