Because that allows one box to do the job of two or
more boxes, and avoids the requirement to have to
synchronize the timers of these multiple boxes (either
manually or by other kludges).

Which says nothing. The bit streams must come from
somewhere, and one of the sources of these bit streams
is the distribution medium (OTA, DBS, or cable).

Problem with that idea is that any idiot can design a
complicated system to do the job of a trivially simple
one. The trick is to provide the necessary functionality
with the simplest possible system design, NOT the other
way around.
