I do not know the exact price for the MP@ML MPEG-2 encoders that are 
used in STBs, but the quality sucks. The elimination of these 
encoders from STBs is a significant factor in the cost of a cable STB 
with PVR. And it is a competitive issue as well, since DBS STBs do 
not need encoder chips, delivering the same quality for real-time 
viewing and anytime viewing.
