There is a work around, Bert. The service packs and hot fixes that are automatically served up on Windows or Office update sites are available through MSDN. http://msdn.microsoft.com. However, for the average user, the only way to use the update functionality is through Windows Update. This will not turn around the browser wars. People will not be willing to pay again for a browser anytime soon. John Willkie, the jw that did once buy Netscape at retail. Just for fun. -----Original Message----- From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Manfredi, Albert E Sent: Sunday, July 04, 2004 11:39 PM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: It's Active X, not IE John Golitsis wrote: > I forwarded the last story to my brother, and he began > espousing the virtues > of Mozilla Firefox, so I thought I'd give it a try. Back when, I used Netscape Navigator only. Then came Win95, where if you happened to install IE, even if by mistake, you were stuck with it. Then came Win98, with its built-in Windows Update feature, an its built-in IE. It's been fine all along to install Mozilla or anything else, but to make use of teh Windows Update feature, unless something has changed recently, you still need IE. In any event, it appears that *any* browser with Active X is vulnerable.
