[opendtv] Italian DTT update

The first two "regions" of Italy (roughly equivalent to states in the
US) which were to shut off analog TV, Sardinia and Valle d'Aosta, were
orignally scheduled to do so in two phases. The first phase involved
shutting off analog in the various "county seats" of these regions,
followed by phase 2, a complete analog shutoff in the entire region on
31 July 2006.

Phase 1 was originally to have occurred on 31 January 2006. That was
delayed to 15 March. It looks like now they are still holding to the 31
July 2006 date for complete analog shutoff, presumably having given up
on the phased approach.

The web page explains that the Ministry of Communications is sponsoring
a road show around Sardinia, which started last week and will go through
April. They will be demoing digital TVs set up in model homes, showing
side by side comparisons of a plasma set fed by an analog signal and
another fed by DTT. If they are only planning SDTV, this might not be as
impressive as it could have been.

In Valle d'Aosta, the scope is broader.

This region wants to become a sort of EU lab for digital connectivity,
showing DTT along with public WiMax and TV to handheld devices. The
vague description leaves open the possibility that TV to handhelds could
be using 3G cellular technology, rather than a broadcast scheme. It
looks like Intel Corporation is involved in aspects of this as well.
They talk about integrated use of DTT and Internet access, among other
things, also for e-government.

However, Val d'Aosta is one gorgeous region, in the Alps, so I'm sure no
one will mind too much "experimenting with digital comms" over there.
Some lab.

So, two dates have slipped by. Let's see if 31 July sticks.
