FWIW, what you describe is a camera copy, or "cam". Usually pretty
ugly as you say. Although if you long for the total cinema experience
with people around you talking, cell phones ringing etc, it might be
just the thing.=20

Supposedly there have been experiments with IR emitters in theaters
to confuse camcorders as a way of preventing this. You would think
they would be more worried about the telecine copies originating from
Russia or SE Asia.

A "screener" is a pre-release copy distributed to reviewers (and
Academy award judges) on tape or DVD. Sometimes watermarked or
visibly branded, usually high quality. Pirate copies derived from
DVD screeners are typically very good.

There has been a fuss the last couple of years around Oscar time
as many of these screeners have leaked to the internet. It used to
be only the ship of state that leaked from the inside out. :-)
