[opendtv] Re: Half Truths - Was More 1080p@60

Bert,

Did you see the posting by Russ Wood?

I'm talking about the extra headaches on the production side that those odd framerates cause. 23.976, 29.97, and 59.94 (all approximations, as they really are the whole number framerate divided by 1.001) are for "NTSC compatibility" and allows us to use NTSC blackburst for genlocking of our HD equipment. I admit that it makes things a bit easier to have a single reference in-house for all video.

However, it does cause editing problems with timecode, as there is no current standard for 23.976 or 59.94 drop frame timecode. An issue that I'm sure will soon be addressed by SMPTE and/or the Masked Engineer. (You might not have noticed that...)

Since HD material needs to go through a downconverter before it can be used in SD, and likewise SD material needs to be upconverted before it can be used in HD, the slight framerate difference could be tackled at the same time that the .

As a consumer of content, you should be fully insulated from these issues, just as I am insulated from network timestamp issues. You are absolutely right that as far as ATSC is concerned, it can work with any of those framerates.

John, as far as I can tell, these frame rates should continue to be
convenient in ATSC for as long as any box out there converts the DTV
signal into NTSC with video and audio (RF, essentially). Right?
