Indeed.
Typical variants for Analog Protection System (i.e. classic Macrovision)
in the cable world are:
0 - Analog_Protection_Off
1 - AGC_Process_On_Split_Burst_Off
2 - AGC_Process_On_2_Line_Split_Burst_On
3 - AGC_Process_On_4_Line_Split_Burst_On
When the set top sees a non-zero value (typically in private sections in the
PMT)
it is supposed to do the wrong thing to the analog signal.
For CGMS-A, the set top is supposed to assert one of the following in line 21
(the XDS bits IIRC)
0 - Copying_Is_Permitted_Without_Restriction
1 - No_Further_Copying_Permitted
2 - One_Generation_Of_Copies_May_Be_Made
3 - No_Copying_Is_Permitted
And your PVR or DVD recorder is supposed to obey all this nonsense, assuming
it didn't get accidentally turned off when you made it region free...
