According to The Perfect Vision, p.43 in print version or p.31 at
http://www.avguide.com/servlet/download/2485.pdf?download=yes
HDMI outputs are typically less accurate and more distorted than component
video outputs, in a survey of DVD players. See under the heading "Surprising
Results."
Of the many products reviewed, only the Denon DVD-1920 and the Krell
Showcase provided better results with HDMI, and the others either
considerably worse (color shifts, image distortion), or almost
indistinguishable but not as good.
He also claims that there's no reason to buy a DVD player that upconverts to
720p/1080i, except for the one Krell example. He claims that this
upconversion in the DVD player usually degrades the image.
