More than that...they are almost never MPEG2. Sony's initial releases
were MPEG2, but I believe they've switched since then. The majority
of HD DVD titles are VC-1, with a small number being H.264.

Actually, "by definition" is a bit strong. I have never seen any
mechanism
in the MPEG-2 specification and annexes that would permit
transmission of
uncompressed audio or video. I'm only making the assumption that "no
mechanism" means "only compressed audio and video."
