Why is there a need for Apple to move away from de-facto?

So they can sell their proprietary peripherals, not allowing users to buy other than Apple hardware.

You obviously have not shopped in an Apple store, either brick and mortar or online.

Apple does offer some peripherals, including displays and WiFi (Airport) routers (another technology that Apple supported early).

But they ALSO support the same peripherals and displays used with PCs. The Mac Mini is plug and play with your average desktop PC - just throw out the big beige box and plug your keyboard, display and printers into the Mini.
