Closed means, I have to buy their > products to use the network. It's really quite simple. I'm going to play wallet devil's advocate here: - If you were to purchase a DVR from DirecTV (before they changed it to rental-only), your cost was anywhere from $500 to $900. I'm going to whack that number down (let's call it depreciation) to say $300. - An Apple TV costs 100 bucks. Savings: $200 for the device - The cheapest DVR plan from DirecTV costs about 60 bucks (yes they advertise lower but it excludes 'hd guide', 'tax' and other bs-fees) - Netflix on the ATV costs about 10 bucks a month Savings: $50 / month So for the cost of a single device, I could literally buy 3 for my house. And save 50 bucks a month. That's $600 a year. One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out which model consumers will flock to.
