I can't stand watching DBS for more than a few minutes. The channels I like
to watch (mainly the Discovery and History ones) are so bit-starved that
every dissolve turns into a mosaic wipe.
If your friend thinks that DBS looks better than cable, then his cable must
have really sucked!
My own cable at home is currently expanded basic analog only, and I still
see compression artifacts in certain scenes. One that comes to mind is the
"crossing chef knives" wipe on Iron Chef America on the Food network.
Obviously Comcast is receiving the programming via satellite in digital
form, and it too is bit starved.
However, it is the venue that I think sets one's expectations for quality.
For example, I can watch a very low res and macroblock filled clip on
YouTube and not care a bit. However, on a network program, it is
unacceptable (to me.)
