How about an Ebay search for "Freeview". The going price for plain
receivers seems to be in around $25.

Bert seems to think that the folks in Europe are facing similar

i though i would check out a few facts.

2K to 8K mode transition - It is true that many of the early
OnDigital STBs did not support the 8K mode. When the transition was
made to Freeview, the Digital Television Group tested the various
transmission modes and released receiver specifications. These specs
require full support for all DVB modes, so everything that has been
sold since some time in 2002 should support both the 2K and 8K
modes. The transmission tests concluded that further research is
needed on the 8K modes, and indicates that they will be useful when
Great Britain recovers analog TV spectrum and is able to start
deploying SFNs.

Here is a page with many useful documents:

http://www.dtg.org.uk/publications/books.html

Of particular interest are:

D-Book' Chapter 22 - Receiver specifications:

Final Report of DTT (DVB-T) Transmission Mode Trials - June 27th 2002

Then I stumbled across the following page listing Freeview receivers:

http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/freeviewreceivers.html

There are about 80 models of set-top and Scart receivers and several
PC card/USB receivers listed.

Clicking through to one retailer I found a basic receiver for pounds
24.99 - or about $47 U.S.

More important, there were all kinds of boxes with PVRs, DVD
recorders, and other features.

This is called a robust marketplace - something that does not exist
for ATSC products in the U.S.

Craig
