Finnish subtitles go as nation switches

Finnish state broadcaster YLE says subtitles on some of its channels
have disappeared as cable operators suffer technical issues in
converting digital signals into analogue ahead of the country's digital
switchover this weekend.

While analogue transmissions are due to end at 4am tomorrow, cable
networks have been given six months to complete their digital roll-outs.

YLE said 400,000 cable households were still without digital set-top
boxes, and analogue systems were experiencing problems interpreting
digital subtitles.

In June a survey found deep dissatisfaction among Finns over the
switchover process, with 41% saying the transition was being implemented
too quickly. Just 42% of homes then had converted every TV in the home,
and a quarter of households lacked a digital set-top box.
