This isn't anything new. We've had fiber in our cable system on campus for
years, and there are no MPEG encoders in the system. Wideband FM from
analog coax cable modulates a laser, and is demodulated at the other end.
The only advantage is that the fiber doesn't require a line amp every 1500
feet.
