John, as you know, we have been around this circle several times.

What is a factor in available product is demand. If Australians are
satisfied with their 6-8 channels of OTA TV, they will demand OTA
products. Over here, people aren't satisfied with the OTA offerings, for
the most part, so CE manufacturers sell other things.

Conspriracy theories aside, it's as simple as that. Even if we had COFDM
here, if CE manufacturers didn't see a lot of demand for OTA, they just
wouldn't bother to make COFDM products geared to the US market (60 Hz
power, 6 MHz channel width, and all the other detailed differences this
market would have).

No. Thanks to the fact that demand exists. ATSC products are cheap now,
simply thanks to the fact that demand exists (due to the FCC mandate).
This notion that ATSC would be inherently expensive was just plain wrong
from the git-go. It was misinformation propagated for political gain.

Since we're going around in circles, don't forget that the vast
majority, if not 100 percent, of what's in a DTT receiver can be
IDENTICAL for DVB-T and ATSC, if CE manufacturers saw enough demand for
both standards. Even combined demods are doable. And the rest is already
combined as it is.
