I guess you haven't followed the thread.
What you should be asking yourself is this. If, in the US, cable were dialed back to offering only 28 or 30 channels, with content such as was described by Barry, and if FOTA TV were to continue to offer the choices it offers today, would the percentage of households using FOTA be higher?
Ignoring the proclivity of the American public for conspicuous consumption, I'd say the answer is yes.
The other point not to ignore is that as DVB-T migrates to DVB-T2, assuming it does, there's no reason to assume that ATSC can't do likewise. One possibility is to increased the robustness of 8T-VSB through more ideal use of the existing FEC, which would then in principle permit the use of 3/4 code for greater spectral efficiency. Or a change to turbo code or LDPC to replace the existing trellis code.
And ditto for the high robustness, narrow streams. New and better ways of doing that are, and will be, emerging in time.
Just as DVB-T2 wants to upgade in a way that won't break DVB-T, 8-VSB can do, and is doing, likewise. 

Or, you can stay stuck in 1999.
