[opendtv] Re: Demand for free DTV rising in Australia

What makes no sense is your take on the facts.

Aussies know nothing of COFDM, consumers in general know nothing of
the technologies they buy. I have said so many times and yet
inexplicably you bring this up as if it was my argument over and over
again.

Let me ask you the this simple question. Why do you do that?

Aussies also did not go into their retail stores and demand a plethora
of devices that receive OTA DTV yet inexplicably, you would argue,
retailers and manufacturers came up with their present cornucopia of
such devices.

To put words in your mouth, what I expect you to say that is, "What a
mystery of the cosmos, they is no rational explanation, it is beyond
logic".

Yet it happened despite the initial belief here and in OZ that
Australia would have a hard time attracting even ONE manufacturer of
OTA COFDM receive equipment since their market is so small and their
choices somewhat different than those in Europe at the time (HD etc).
They discussed at length whether to subsidize OTA receivers or have
their government buy them in bulk.

All along, however, based on my belief that 8-VSB was/is c**p and that
DVB-T was/is far superior I said that OZ would be a fantastic success
and that OTA DTV in the US would flounder for years waiting for a fix.

It would seem that I was/am right but instead of taking a look at the
reality of OZ, the UK, Germany, Finland or anywhere else you might
look, you contend that it is all just beyond rational explanation.

Rational by your own definition IMO.

If you might remember the common wisdom was that the US market with

Oh, so you seriously believe that the reason Aussies are satisfied with
the 6-8 OTA channels they have available, to the tune of 75 percent of
households satisfied, is because they get those with COFDM. And that the
reason Americans aren't satisfied with 6-8 OTA channels they can also
typically receive, is because it's not over COFDM.

Makes no sense. This trend began in the late 1970s, when digital
modulation was not an issue. Americans went in hordes to cable in the
late 1970s and early 1980s, Aussies did not. Aussies still don't. What
do you attribute that to? PAL vs NTSC?

Obsessing over modulation when modulation is not a factor just means
that whatever is actually wrong with OTA TV in the US won't get fixed.
