You need the cable card to access protected tiers that are sent in
analog AND QAM. It looks like most sets are shipping with QAM/ATSC
tuners, but only a handful of channels can be accessed without the
cable card - typically the same broadcast stations you can access
with an antenna - rendering these tuners mostly worthless.
Meanwhile the DBS and cable operators are starting a "real" HD war
based on services that are built around an HD PVR box and on demand
services...
