I wonder how many people really believe that only 10% of the households use FOTA. Clearly, 10% of the population do not use an MVPD. But it has often been asked how many of that 90% have a second or third TV on an antenna only. I know at least a few people that are using the antenna AND an MVPD and even more that have the MVPD on the main TVs while others TVs, perhaps ones used more than the one in the main living room, are on antenna only. I know because I helped them get them bet these peripheral TVs to work when FOTA went to ATSC. So I agree: the 10% number is blatantly false or misleading at best. And I won't even get into the statistical methods and surveys that make the number 10%!

As I said, the actual numbers are open to debate.

You can add to the list of questions:

Of the 10% who do not subscribe to cable, how many do not watch any TV at all?

As Dan noted in another post, many younger folks do not use antennas or cable.

But there is a significant percentage of homes that just say not to TV, or SEVERELY limit the number of hours that family members can watch TV.

Clearly there a many TVs that are still hooked to antennas or analog cable outlets. The TV in our bedroom has not been turned on in at least six months. So a better metric is how much actual TV viewing takes place via FOTA versus OTHER means.

If a program is available FOTA then a significant percentage of the audience may be using an antenna, as they have few alternatives for "live TV" other than some streaming services. And if the home is in the lowest socioeconomic demographics them may not have broadband, but probably do have a DVD player for delayed viewing.

If a program is only available via MVPDs clearly FOTA only homes do not contribute to the ratings, except for delayed viewing via DVD or streaming. This makes the fact that 60% of prime time and 70-80% of non-prime time "live TV" viewing is non-broadcast content even more significant, as FOTA homes do not contribute to the latter.
