IMHO - you cannot get the real HDTV experience with a CRT display
(either direct view or projection). They are much better than SDTV,
but when placed side-by-side with any of the "lithographed" display
technologies the difference is quality is OBVIOUS.

The price of CRT-based rear projection, HD capable sets has tumbled
in the U.S. because of the high level of interest in the newer
display technologies (and the obvious quality differences). The size
of the cabinets is a major factor as well.

The good news is that the price of LCD panels and RP systems, and DLP
RP systems is also coming down rapidly. The list price for the set we
bought was $3395 just a few weeks before Christmas. Then Samsung
added a rebate and the stores started discounting. My father-in-law
worked for Sears, so we were able to get an additional 10% discount
off of the sale price. Bottom line, the set cost about $2,350
including sales tax.

You are correct about compensating for picture height. At a minimum
you should look for a 16:9 display with the same screen height as the
4:3 display you are replacing. I'm not sure why, but 4:3 screens look
a lot bigger than a 16:9 screen with the same screen height.
