Hello John and all,

I am not familiar with discussions in the BluRay group. Please give us a link ?

Our solution is to offer a "special 21:9" BluRay player that will shift its
subtitles
up until they are above line 945. That way, when we zoom lines 135..944 up
to 1080 lines (full height of the panel), the subtitles will always be (just)
visible.
(There are no BluRay players with "anamorphic" 21:9 output that fills 1080
lines.)
I suppose that the same player can be used for 21:9 anamorphic projectors !

" The perfect companion for the Cinema 21:9 TV. Unlike normal Blu-ray players,
the BDP9100 is the only Blu-ray player allowing you to shift subtitles in the
21:9
screen aspect ratio, to retain the subtitles without the black bars. "

I don't personally have such 21:9-ready BluRay player. When I set my TV to
auto-format mode, the TV responds to the presence of subtitles in the lower
black bar by reducing the zoom factor a bit and shifting the picture up a bit.
Yes it is annoying if there are long pauses in the dialog and it switches back
to the normal mode (i.e. without subtitles). It's a compromise, but it works.

It's this kind of facts that I might present at the Tech Retreat. If I decide
to go.

I've been watching 21:9 for months now, also with full-16:9 content, and have
absolutely no regrets of this purchase. I love it. On the IFA exhibition we have
shown two stereo ("3D") prototypes of the same TV, with passive glasses.
One should not conclude from this that there will be a product on the market
any time soon, or ever. We haven't made up our mind yet. :-(

Groeten,
-- Jeroen

Hello Jeroen,

A question about the Philips 21:9 set and subtitles on Blu-Ray disks - as
you've probably seen, subtitle placement varies from one disk to the other -
the two lines of text sometimes appear over the active picture, or are split,
with the upper line over active picture and the lower line over the black
letterbox area.

This seems to be entirely an authoring choice, and the viewer is not given the
ability to move the subtitles within the player (I've heard that this is "not
allowed" according to the standard. Not sure if it's precluded, or just an
oversight).

The "split" subtitle placement currently causes problems in home theaters set
up for anamorphic projection - the second line is cut off when full vertical
stretch is used. And unless I'm mistaken, this subtitle placement can be
problematic on the new 21:9 set as well...

I think there have been discussions in the Blu-Ray group to address this issue.
Are you familiar with this?
