Once this starts we will be into the phase of consumers asking "where
are my cheap converters?". That should be interesting.

CEA backs move to speed switchover campaign
US trade group the Consumer Electronics Association is backing calls by
leading Democrats urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to
speed up a digital switchover awareness campaign.
The US will complete switchover on February 17, 2009. Every US household
will be able to claim two vouchers each worth $40 to be spent on digital
converter boxes under a $1.5bn switchover fund agreed by the Bush
administration in March.
A month earlier the FCC said it planned to spend $1.5m on a
consumer-facing switchover campaign. Now the heads of the House Energy &
Commerce Committee and Telecommunications Subcommittee have written to
FCC chairman Kevin Martin saying the FCC's campaign should start
immediately. Commerce chairman John Dingell and Telecommunications
chairman Ed Markey also want the FCC to force US broadcasters and
consumer electronics manufacturers to bring forward their switchover
campaigns.
In a statement the CEA said it commended "the effort by chairmen Dingell
and Markey to facilitate further consumer education efforts as we move
toward the digital television (DTV) transition date of February 17,
2009. The result of years of negotiation, this transition will improve
our nation's technological competitiveness, our public safety and
consumers' lives".
"We strongly agree with chairmen Dingell and Markey that broadcasters
should inform their over-the-air audience with public service
announcements as quickly as possible," added the statement.
