BRASILIA -(Dow Jones)- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva
will sign a decree on Thursday implanting the Japanese standard for
digital television in Brazil, presidential spokesman Andre Singer said
Monday.

The ceremony will coincide with a planned visit by Japanese
Communications Minister Heizo Takenaka to sign a term of agreement on
the matter.

Brazil last week reached an accord with Japan and representatives of its
industry to adopt the Japanese technical standard for digital television
broadcasting, bringing to a close a year-long debate over which standard
would be adopted. Brazilian officials had also studied the adoption of
U.S. and European standards.

According to local press reports, the accord with Japan also involves
technology transfers, the establishment of semiconductor manufacturing
operations in Brazil, and financing of up to $500 million from the Japan
Bank for International Cooperation, or JBIC.
