Toyota did the exact opposite.  They started in a country with
government-financed helth care.

 

They make good to great products, and used their home market to figure out
how to answer the needs of a bigger foreign one.  (The U.S. makers just
tried to figure out to force their shoddy wares on foreigners.)

 

They only have non-union plants in the U.S.

 

The new Beetle is made at only one plant in the world: Puebla. Mexico.

 

Last time I checked, this plant has been picketed four times mid-contract
for higher wages for the workers, once the car became successful.

 

VW is on the same path as Ford and GM.  However, there is the additional
problem of management corruption, union influence and the investment by the
state of Lower Saxony in VW.  Were it not for Angela Merkel, I'd say VW
being owned by the German government to "save" it was a lead-pipe cinch.

 

And, if you can make it a campaign to "preserve Canadian culture" I can see
the same happening at U.S.0owned car plants in Canada.

 

Government buying up failing enterprises isn't a sign of a free-market
economy.  Bad, stupid, or inefficient businesses must fail, just like the
opposite must succeed.  (Not that it's always so.)

were negotiated with unions.

 

Now, the cost of HEALTH CARE thet the big three thought was nothing to worry
about in their salad days is $2,100 per Ford Car sold, and with GM it's
closer to 3K.

 

Their business model is DEAD.  And, they're just a few years ahead of
newspapers.

And Toyota?

Think about this: 

Ford has spent  the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the
US, 

 claiming they can't make money paying American wages. Toyota has spent the

 last thirty  years building more than a dozen plants inside the US.

 

 The last quarter's results:  Toyota made 4 billion in profits

 while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses.

 

 Ford folks are still scratching their heads.
