Bert; You are UTTERLY clueless about this. Some people with some models of Dish receivers have units that combine the satellite EPG with terrestrial PSIP. However, one has to remember -- or in your case, know -- that DirecTV uses TV Guide data as their EPG source. It can be out of date, as broadcast TV sometimes change the program being aired at the "last minute" or within 24 hours of the schedule broadcast. Even Tribune Media Services has more frequent data updates than does TV Guide. Sports overruns (ever know exactly how long a football game or baseball game will run?) also cause issues. Frankly, Dish seems to have the more seamless functionality here. They are now picking up many if not most of their terrestrial sources via over the air receivers in each market. But, you said "the DBS" company, meaning both. You are trying to say -- inartfully -- that all DBS systems have an EPG. This is about as knowledable as what a virgin knows about sex. I've never heard of DirecTV merging terrestrial EPG data with satellite. The DTC-100 and 200 didn't do it. What models are you talking about? One point is that if you PSIP is bad, Dish's receiver will hiccup. They are actually consuming PSIP. You see, it's not that they have an EPG, it's how accurate the EPG is when you decide to watch program z out of a sea of choices. Since you've never been a cable subscriber, nor have you been a DBS subscriber (I've been both, but am not at the present) you don't have a sea of choices, you have a little stream. The DBS installation people also do OTA installations, if asked to. At least, in some markets. We have many cases of this over here. My brother-in-law in Albuquerque is also an example. The EPG is a non-issue. The OTA and DBS EPGs are merged seamlessly by the DBS company. I would expect an OTA broadcaster to be encouraging this rather than trying to come up with reasons why it shouldn't be done.
