Hello again,

My mail feed was erratic when I wrote this (below), so I had not yet seen
the remainder of the thread. I understand now that Cliff has used the
NTSC output (or other Y'PbPr SD outputs) to connect to an SD 4:3 monitor.

It is also becoming obvious that the BluRay disc in question contains a
pillarboxed signal (4:3 content in a 16:9 format). Let's assume that this
is a valid format for HDTV content, and full-frame 4:3 is not a valid
HDTV format. (It exists on DVD, but it does not exist on BluRay.)

DVDs can contain 4:3 movies, and DVD players and BluRay players that play
DVDs, can output this 4:3 content to a 4:3 monitor. They can also letterbox
or pan-scan 16:9 content to a 4:3 monitor. The players have menu options
to make this choice - for SD content !

But what is apparently not possible is to play a BluRay (= HDTV) disc on
a BluRay player to any 4:3 display, be it SD or HD. To put it simply: that
is not a valid use case for BluRay. Get a 16:9 HDTV display. (Or 21:9)

What else would you buy a BluRay player for ? HDTV is not meant for 4:3.
4:3 content lives on DVD, and even there it is a minority (in Europe).

I fully understand your reasoning that this problem *could* have been
solved, by removing the black pillars. But in order to be solved by the
manufacturer of the BluRay player, it must first be recognized as a valid
use case, then it will be specified, maybe it will even be standardized,
and then it will be solved. Apparently this was not meant to be so.

I'm speaking only for myself. I know absolutely nothing about development
of BluRay players for Philips. I'm supposed to know all about displays.

Groeten,
